Opportunity Overview
GIBB, in collaboration with government, is offering opportunities through the Youth Employment Service (YES) Programme. This initiative aims to help young South Africans gain essential skills, valuable workplace experience, and earn an income. The YES Programme is designed to significantly improve participants' chances of securing long-term employment.
This programme is open to all eligible South African youth, and disabled youth are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants should indicate their disability when submitting their application. Internship opportunities are available in areas such as Business Administration, Project Administration, Mechanical Engineering (Mining & Power), Information Technology, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Architecture. Minimum Requirements
Applicants must be South African citizens. Disabled youths are welcome to apply and should declare their disability during the application process. Specific requirements for each stream are:
- GIBB YES Programme - Business Admin
- National Diploma/Degree in Commerce, Supply Chain Management, Logistics Management, Business Management, Procurement, Project Management, or a related field.
- GIBB YES Programme - Project Administrator
- National Diploma in Business Administration.
- Strong MS Word and Excel skills.
- GIBB YES Programme - Mining & Power (Mechanical Engineering)
- Grade 12 or equivalent with Mathematics, Science, and English.
- BTech/BSc Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- GIBB YES Programme - IT
- A completed degree or qualification in Software Development.
- Exposure to SQL Server, C#, Power BI/Dashboards.
- GIBB YES Programme - Civil Engineering
- Grade 12 or equivalent with Mathematics, Science, and English.
- BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering.
- GIBB YES Programme - Electrical Engineering
- Grade 12 or equivalent with Mathematics, Science, and English.

What an internship actually is
An internship is a fixed-term work-experience placement for someone who already holds a qualification. Unlike a learnership, it does not award a new qualification — its purpose is to convert a certificate, diploma or degree into the experience that entry-level adverts keep asking for. In the public service these run for a set term and are generally not renewable.
What the work actually looks like
- You are placed in a specific unit under a named supervisor and given the unit's ordinary work, at a junior level.
