Opportunity Overview

The Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC) is looking for a Senior Deal Originator or Deal Originator to join its Business Development team. This vital role focuses on generating deal flow and building a strong pipeline of prospective insurance and financial transactions for the company.

The successful candidate will apply strong technical skills to assess complex financial transactions early on, determining their bankability and commercial viability. You will engage with key ECIC stakeholders, including financiers, senior government officials, corporate executives, and directors, operating in a hybrid work environment from Centurion.

Minimum Requirements

  • A degree with specialisation in a commercial or technical discipline, including but not limited to Economics, Accountancy, Finance, Banking, Science, Law, or Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ transactional experience in origination sales planning, structuring deals, project financing, corporate finance, or political risk underwriting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct market research to identify appropriate business opportunities that match ECIC products and eligibility requirements.
  • Develop a strong pipeline of high-quality projects and transactions through proactive origination and business development.
  • Comprehensively map industry or sector opportunities to generate a list of prospects.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, global, regional, and local private businesses, banking and multilateral partners, and government officials to further specific underwriting opportunities related to the export of capital goods and services.
  • Organize various business initiatives to increase the ECIC client base in different market segments and geographies.
  • Review and analyze deal structures to determine ECIC’s appetite, industry, and project risks in relation to the risks offered for insurance coverage.
  • Analyze the structure of originated transactions regarding products, services to be exported/performed, and contract terms, prior to handover to the underwriting team.
  • Perform preliminary assessments of complex financial transactions and advise clients on potential commercial and non-commercial risks, coverage possibilities, and relevant terms.
  • Work closely with the underwriting team and other business units to find innovative solutions for client transactional needs.
  • Coordinate and lead cross-functional project teams within ECIC from deal inception to close, managing internal and external client relationships throughout.
  • Raise ECIC's profile by participating in television interviews and acting as a spokesperson at conferences and networking events.
  • Manage client relationships and advocate for clients internally.
  • Contribute to internal and external knowledge-sharing platforms, providing specialist inputs and fostering a client-centric culture.
  • Prepare high-quality presentations and papers for ECIC’s management and Board of Directors, including regional strategies and deal pipelines.
  • Carry out any other roles assigned by the Head of Business Development.

What the Work Involves

As a Senior Deal Originator/Deal Originator, you will be at the forefront of ECIC's efforts to expand its portfolio. Your daily work will involve extensive market research to spot potential business opportunities and developing strategies to cultivate a robust pipeline of insurance and financial transactions. This role requires a keen eye for detail as you will be reviewing and analyzing complex deal structures and financial transactions, often advising clients on the intricate web of commercial and non-commercial risks involved.

You will spend considerable time building and maintaining strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, from private businesses and banking partners to senior government officials, both locally and internationally. The work is collaborative, requiring close coordination with the underwriting team and other business units to innovate solutions for client needs. You will also play a role in enhancing ECIC's public profile through participation in events and media. This is a hybrid role, combining remote work with in-person activities, and you will report directly to the Head of Business Development.

What you'll need to apply

Follow the advert exactly. Private employers differ, and sending more than was asked for does not help.

What a fixed-term post involves

A contract post is employment for a defined period or project. The work and the requirements are usually identical to a permanent post at the same level — the difference is the end date. Contract staff generally receive the same salary scale, sometimes with benefits paid as an allowance instead of a fund contribution.

How the selection usually runs

  • The screening and interview process mirrors a permanent post, and the minimum requirements are applied just as strictly.
  • Contract posts are often filled faster than permanent ones, because the funding is tied to a project timeline.

What you leave with

Directly relevant experience at the level you want, and internal standing when a permanent post at that level is eventually advertised.

Where this leads next

  1. Contract renewal or extension

Continued funding for the project or post.

  2. Permanent appointment at the same level

Competing for the post when it is advertised — contract service does not convert automatically.

  3. A higher level elsewhere

The experience the contract gave you, which is what the next advert is asking for.

A typical route, not a guarantee — progression depends on vacancies, funding and your own performance.

Watch out for this

Confirm what happens at the end of the term before you resign from something else. A fixed-term contract ends by expiry, and that is not a dismissal you can contest.
