The Department of Employment and Labour is offering an opportunity for an Inspector based in Johannesburg. This role is crucial for upholding labour laws and ensuring fair working conditions across various sectors.

As an Inspector, you will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with a wide range of labour legislation, protecting the rights of workers, and promoting a fair and equitable employment environment within the province.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• A three-year relevant tertiary qualification in Labour Relations Management, BCOM Law, or an LLB degree.
• A valid driver’s licence.
• One year of functional experience in Inspection and Enforcement Services.
• Knowledge of: Departmental policies and procedures, Skills Development Act, Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Skills Development Levies Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, COIDA, Unemployment Insurance Act, UI Contribution Act, and the Employment Equity Act.
• Skills in: Facilitation, Planning and Organising (mainly for own tasks), Computer Literacy, Interpersonal communication, Conflict handling, Negotiation, Problem Solving, Interviewing, listening and observation, Presentation, Innovation, Analytical thinking, and both Verbal and written communication.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Planning and independently conducting inspections to ensure compliance with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA).
• Executing independent investigations on reported cases related to contravention of labour legislation and enforcing compliance as necessary.
• Planning and conducting proactive (Blitz) inspections regularly to monitor adherence to labour legislation.
• Independently conducting advocacy campaigns on all Labour Legislation.
• Drafting and maintaining inspection plans and reports, including the analysis and compilation of consolidated statistical reports for allocated cases.

What the Work Involves

As an Inspector, you will primarily work independently, carrying out a mix of office-based planning and fieldwork. Your day-to-day activities will include visiting workplaces to conduct inspections, assessing compliance with labour laws like the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and investigating complaints. You will also be responsible for educating employers and employees about their rights and responsibilities through advocacy campaigns. A key part of the role involves meticulous record-keeping, drafting inspection reports, and compiling statistical data from your findings. This role requires a balance of analytical skill, practical enforcement, and public engagement.
