Opportunity Overview
The Embassy of France in South Africa is seeking a motivated Media and Communication Officer to join its Political Section in Pretoria. This role is crucial for managing the Embassy's engagement with media, monitoring news and social media trends, and supporting the overall digital communication strategy.
Working under the guidance of the Political Counsellor, the successful candidate will play a key role in public diplomacy and information dissemination for the Embassy. This fixed-term contract offers the opportunity to obtain a permanent contract after a qualifying period, along with French language training provided by the Embassy.
Minimum Requirements
- Experience in communication, journalism, or public relations. Internships and traineeships are considered relevant experience.
- A qualification in Communication, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
- Experience with video editing, Canva, or similar content creation software.
- Excellent organisational skills, including managing media contact databases and press subscriptions.
- Outstanding written communication skills in English.
- Ability to take initiative, develop new communication ideas, and build professional relationships with journalists and influencers.
- Strong interest in France, diplomacy, South African politics, society, digital culture, and online trends.
- Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Excellent written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of French is a strong advantage. Employees not fluent in French (C1/C2) will be required to attend French language classes offered by the Embassy.
- Non-South African applicants must possess a valid work permit and/or permanent residence permit.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare a daily press review of the South African media.
- Monitor social media trends and provide recommendations to the Political Counsellor.
- Manage and update the Embassy's website.
- Conduct press and social media analysis relating to diplomatic initiatives, summits, and crisis situations.
- Organise press events and media engagements.
- Assist the Communication Attaché with the preparation of social media content, including videos.
- Support the Communication Attaché and provide cover during periods of leave.
