Opportunity Overview
Ekurhuleni Water Care Company (ERWAT), a leader in environmental services, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Project Manager: Mechanical to join their Infrastructure, Planning & Project Division. This is a permanent position based in Kempton Park, Gauteng.
The successful candidate will be instrumental in managing and delivering mechanical engineering projects. This role involves providing essential technical guidance, overseeing contracts, monitoring finances, and leading project teams to ensure that all initiatives are completed on time, within budget, to the required quality standards, and in full compliance with all regulatory and organisational requirements.

Key Responsibilities
- Project and Programme Management:
- Plan, coordinate, and manage mechanical engineering projects from initiation to completion.
- Provide support to Engineers on projects, ensuring alignment with objectives, budget, and standards.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, policies, and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Environmental Management requirements.
- Lead the execution of projects directly, ensuring time, cost, and quality targets are achieved.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks through proactive planning and monitoring.
- Ensure project close-out reports are accurate, comprehensive, and completed in line with organisational requirements.
- Develop project schedules, budgets, and resource plans for individual projects.
- Communicate and adjust individual project plans in line with project progress when required to ensure objectives are met.
- Ensure technical issues on projects are resolved.
- Establish working relationships with end-user departments to facilitate coordination and execution of project work, minimising operational impact.
- Prepare and review tender documentation, contracts, and technical specifications in line with applicable standards.
- Manage and monitor contractors and consultants to ensure contractual obligations and performance targets are met.
- Validate and approve invoices against deliverables.
- Conduct project performance management evaluations in consultation with end-user departments.
- Track project performance and progress through regular reporting and review of deliverables to ensure the project is kept on schedule and delivered within the approved budget.
- Administer contract variations, claims, and disputes in collaboration with the Quantity Surveyor and other relevant stakeholders.
- Participate in project negotiations in collaboration with Supply Chain Management.
- Engineering and Technical Support:
- Provide strategic mechanical engineering input and advice from project inception through planning, implementation, and operations.
- Implement engineering designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Identify and report on engineering challenges that arise during project execution, for resolution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional departments to provide technical advice on infrastructure planning and development initiatives.
- Lead concept studies and provide technical expertise in designing and optimising pump, pipeline, and mechanical systems.
- Continuously monitor and research emerging technologies, engineering methodologies, and industry innovations, evaluating their relevance and advising on practical applications to improve mechanical engineering systems and project performance.
- Financial Management:
- Track and report on project expenditure, financial forecasts, and budget variances, and recommend corrective actions.
- Coordinate with the Quantity Surveyor on cost management, budget adjustments, and financial reporting.
- Reporting and Documentation:
- Ensure comprehensive project documentation, including technical reports, plans, and registers, is maintained, accurate, up to date, and readily available for audit and compliance purposes.
- Prepare and present project progress, financial, and performance reports to management.
