Minimum Requirements
- A degree, diploma, or final-year student status in Journalism, Media Studies, Event Management, Communications, Marketing, or a related field.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to interact professionally with high-profile guests, suppliers, and attendees.
- Comfortable with learning digital webinar platforms (e.g., Zoom Events, YouTube Live), social media tools, and basic data tracking systems.
- Demonstrates precision, organisation, and thoroughness, with the ability to identify potential issues before they escalate.
- Possesses an energetic, solution-oriented mindset, thriving in unscripted and time-bound environments.
- A genuine interest in news, public discourse, and the mission of Daily Maverick.
Key Responsibilities
- Learn to plan, set up, and execute live journalism events and digital webinars from start to finish.
- Develop skills in managing high-level speakers and guests, including hosting pre-event technical dry runs and sending panel briefs.
- Gain hands-on experience in coordinating venue setups, technical requirements, and liaising with vendors under live conditions.
- Assist with technical support and smooth operational execution during live broadcasts to build real-time problem-solving skills.
- Learn how to deploy event promotional assets across multiple channels, including newsletters, site banners, and social media.
- Work alongside designers and content creators to ensure all event collateral adheres to Daily Maverick’s visual identity.
- Measure event marketing success by tracking registration-to-attendance rates and compiling post-event performance summaries.
- Master live audience management during webinars, including moderating chats, facilitating Q&A sessions, and supporting the user experience.
- Discover how events connect with the broader Daily Maverick ecosystem, including DM168, Maverick451 books, podcasts, and merchandise.
- Represent Daily Maverick professionally in all interactions with panelists, vendors, and the reader community.
What the Work Involves
As an Intern in Live Journalism & Events, you will be deeply involved in the planning and execution of Daily Maverick's live productions and digital webinars. Your daily tasks could range from coordinating high-level speakers and managing logistics with vendors to ensuring technical setups run smoothly during live broadcasts. You will assist with troubleshooting any issues that arise, developing your problem-solving abilities in real-time, fast-paced environments.
Beyond event operations, you will contribute to event marketing and digital promotion by helping to deploy promotional assets across various channels and collaborating with creative teams. A key part of your role will involve tracking performance metrics to understand audience engagement. You will also manage live audience interactions during webinars and act as a brand ambassador, representing Daily Maverick in all professional engagements. The work environment will be dynamic, often shifting between office planning and live event sites.
