Opportunity Overview

Correctional Services is seeking dedicated Medical Officers for a 12-month contract across various facilities in the Western Cape. This is a crucial role for medical professionals committed to providing essential healthcare within the correctional environment. These positions offer a significant opportunity for medical practitioners, with an attractive all-inclusive annual salary ranging from R1,041,402 to R1,375,245, depending on the grade and experience. Posts are available in regions including Goodwood/Pollsmoor, Drakenstein/Allandale, West Coast/Voorberg, Southern Cape (2 posts), Overberg, and Breede River.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Officer.
  • Current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
  • A basic medical degree (MBBCH or equivalent).
  • Computer literacy.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • Experience levels for different grades:
  • Grade 1: No experience required.
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Officer after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
  • Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Officer after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
  • Key Competencies and Attributes:
  • Excellent clinical skills, including history taking, examination, clinical assessment, and management procedures.
  • Good professional attitude, communication skills, and ethics.
  • Knowledge of public health legislation.
  • Skills in financial management, project and programme management, transformation management, change management, and stakeholder management.
  • Ability in problem solving and analysis, service delivery innovation, decision making, people management, empowerment, and evaluation.
  • Integrity and honesty, with strong teamwork ability.
  • Confidentiality and good interpersonal relations, along with assertiveness and networking capability.
  • A strong understanding of the public service policy and legislative framework.

Key Responsibilities

The successful Medical Officer will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating and supporting the provision of medical health care services within correctional facilities.
  • Rendering basic medical health care services to inmates.
  • Improving the clinical quality of primary health care services through direct patient care, mentoring, and supervision of healthcare professionals.
  • Rendering medico-legal services.
  • Attending relevant administrative and clinical meetings.
  • Implementing and monitoring adherence to national health standards.
  • Ensuring compliance with Standard Treatment Guidelines and the Essential Medicine List.
  • Facilitating and coordinating medical emergency preparedness and life support services.
  • Providing emergency medical care, including after-hours services.
  • Referring patients to authorised and recognised health care providers.
  • Liaising with internal and external counterparts regarding healthcare delivery.
  • Managing performance information, human resources, finance, and assets related to health services.
