Opportunity Overview

Correctional Services is looking for skilled Clinical Nurse Practitioners to join their team in the Eastern Cape region at the Burgersdorp Correctional Centre. This is a crucial role focused on providing comprehensive primary healthcare services within the correctional environment.

The successful candidates will be appointed on a 12-month contract. Two positions are available, offering an opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of offenders by delivering essential preventative, curative, and rehabilitative nursing care.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Degree or National Diploma in Nursing.
  • Four years of relevant nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • A post-basic qualification in Primary Health Care, accredited with the SANC.
  • This post-basic qualification must have a duration of at least 1 year in Curative Skills in Primary Health Care, accredited with the SANC.
  • Current registration with the SANC as a professional Nurse.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence.
  • Knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, nursing statutes, and other relevant legal frameworks (e.g., Nursing, Health, Occupational and Safety Act).
  • Understanding of the Offender Rights Charter and Batho-Pele principles.
  • Sound knowledge of health programmes run at the Primary Health Care (PHC) level.
  • Ability to relieve in different service areas.
  • Demonstrated coordination, planning, team-building, supervisory, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of all applicable legislation, guidelines, and policies related to nursing principles.
  • Good interpersonal relationships and listening skills.
  • Empathy, tactfulness, integrity, and honesty.
  • Report writing skills.
  • Adaptability and conflict management abilities.
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for a range of duties, including:

  • Providing quality comprehensive Primary Health Care services, promoting preventative, curative, and rehabilitative services for offenders.
  • Performing clinical nursing practice in accordance with the scope of practice and nursing standards for primary health care.
  • Conducting routine examinations of offenders and treating minor ailments within the scope of practice.
  • Rendering administrative services, such as providing accurate statistics for evaluation and future planning.
  • Identifying needs for financial planning and indirect control of expenditure, including ordering and control of medicine and medical stock.
  • Developing and ensuring the implementation of nursing care plans.
  • Updating offender records and participating in clinical records audits.
  • Providing a safe and therapeutic environment as required by the Nursing, Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable prescripts.
  • Managing human resources, finances, and assets.
  • Managing performance information.
