The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies is seeking a Director to lead its Technology Innovation and Artificial Intelligence Governance initiatives. Minimum Requirements

• An NQF Level 7 qualification or a Degree in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Computer Science, Information Systems, Digital Transformation, Engineering/Innovation Management, or an equivalent relevant qualification.
• A minimum of five (5) years of experience at Middle or Senior Management level in leading digital transformation, technology adoption, or innovation ecosystem development.
• A postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8 or above) in Digital Economy Studies, Technology Management, or Public Sector Innovation will be an added advantage.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and create an enabling digital environment, policy framework, and innovative strategic reforms for technology innovation, research, and artificial intelligence governance services.
• Manage and drive the development and implementation of technologies and artificial intelligence policies and strategies to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth in the digital sector.
• Research and analyse emerging technologies, market trends, and industry practices to inform strategic decision-making and increase innovation in high-tech manufacturing and relevant industries.
• Invest in research and development (R&D) and establish financing and alternative start-up scheme activities to support and promote responsible innovation practices.
• Facilitate access to venture capital, grants, blended finance, development finance, corporate investment, and public-private partnerships, and manage intellectual property.

What the Work Involves

The Director will operate from Pretoria, Hatfield, within a professional office environment, focusing on high-level strategic planning and implementation. Day-to-day work will involve leading initiatives to establish a supportive digital environment and robust policy frameworks that govern technology innovation and artificial intelligence across the country. This includes continuously researching new technologies and market trends to ensure that policies are forward-thinking and effective.

A significant part of the role will be dedicated to driving the development and practical application of AI policies and strategies, aiming to stimulate entrepreneurship and economic growth in the digital sector. The Director will also be responsible for securing crucial funding and developing strategic partnerships, engaging with venture capitalists, development finance institutions, and private sector partners to support research, development, and the commercialisation of new technologies.
