Opportunity Overview
The City of Johannesburg Metro is seeking an Ombudsman for its Office of the Ombudsman. This is a significant five-year fixed-term contract opportunity to contribute to good governance within the City.
The Ombudsman provides an independent and impartial function, central to resolving complaints of maladministration and human rights abuses involving the City administration. This role is crucial for fostering accountability and transparency in public service.
Minimum Requirements
- A relevant tertiary qualification, preferably a B-Degree plus a Post Graduate qualification in law (LLB).
- Admission as an attorney or advocate to the bar is an advantage.
- Proven track record of providing accurate and effective legal counsel.
- 10 years’ relevant experience or more in a senior/executive management position leading a Legal/Law unit within a public sector organisation or in Local Government, with one or more of the following:
- Being a retired judge of the high court; or
- Being admitted as an advocate or an attorney who has, for a period of at least 10 years after having been admitted, practised as an advocate or an attorney; or
- Being qualified to be admitted as an advocate or an attorney who has, for a cumulative period of at least 10 years after having qualified, lectured in law at a university; or
- Having specialised knowledge of, or experience in, the administration of justice, public administration, or public finance, for a cumulative period of at least 10 years; or
- Having acquired any combination of the experience mentioned above for a cumulative period of at least 10 years.

- Provide an independent and impartial investigation function for complaints of maladministration and human rights abuses by the City administration.
- Facilitate the effective resolution of complaints.
- Promote accountability and transparency within the City administration.
What the Work Involves
As the Ombudsman for the City of Johannesburg, you will be at the forefront of upholding fair administration and protecting human rights. Your daily work will involve independently investigating specific complaints of maladministration and abuses from the public against the City administration. This includes meticulously examining cases, gathering information, and working towards fair and effective resolutions for all parties involved. The role operates from the Sappi Building, located at 48 Ameshoff Street, Braamfontein, in Johannesburg.
