Opportunity Overview

Capricorn District Municipality is inviting applications for the position of Senior Accountant – AFS and Reporting within its Finance Department. This role is crucial for managing the municipality's Annual Financial Statements (AFS) and various financial reporting duties.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with financial standards and regulations, contributing to the financial integrity and transparency of the municipality. Minimum Requirements

  • B. Com Accounting Degree or BTech Accounting.
  • Completed articles (SAICA Traineeship).
  • 4 years’ experience in the preparation of financial statements, accounting, reporting, VAT, and CaseWare.
  • Computer Literacy.
  • Knowledge of the Municipal Financial Management Act (MFMA), GRAP Standards, and mSCOA.
  • Possess analytical, interpersonal, planning, and organising skills, with strong attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual GRAP-compliant financial statements and reconcile disclosure notes.
  • Review and prepare working papers, supporting schedules, and perform analytical reviews.
  • Manage month-end closures of financial records, including reviewing and reconciling mSCOA general ledger accounts.
  • Resolve discrepancies, execute accounting journal entries (e.g., depreciation, accruals), and review daily financial transactions.
  • Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, mid-year, and annual financial reports for various stakeholders.
  • Compile and update the audit file monthly, coordinating with internal and external auditors.
  • Supervise junior staff and manage their performance.
  • Liaise with other departments to gather financial data and documentation necessary for financial statements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards and legislative changes.
  • Handle audit findings and implement audit action plans on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure all accounting policies and financial records adhere to regulatory frameworks and standards (e.g., IFRS, GAAP).
  • Provide guidance to personnel on the interpretation of procedures and application sequences related to the financial management cycle.
  • Review monthly VAT reconciliation schedules, VAT 201 returns, and ensure timely submission to SARS.
  • Oversee input and output VAT declarations, reconcile monthly VAT accounts, and handle all SARS-related issues.
