Airports Company South Africa Limited (ACSA) is offering an exciting opportunity for a Fire Prevention Officer in the Free State, based at Bloemfontein Airport. This role is crucial for maintaining the highest safety, security, environment, and quality standards across airport operations.

As a Fire Prevention Officer, you will play a vital role in ensuring that all airport facilities comply with national and international aviation safety legislation, municipal by-laws, and SANS standards. This position is essential for the continuous safe operation of the airport and the protection of its users and assets.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Education: A relevant Diploma in Fire Prevention is essential.
• Experience: At least 3 years of Fire and Rescue Operational experience is essential.
• Driving Licence: A Code EC articulated heavy vehicle driver's license.
• Computer Skills: Intermediate proficiency in MS Office.
• Security Clearance: Must be eligible for Top Security Clearance within 3 months of appointment.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of critical duties, including:

• Ensuring full compliance with aviation legislative requirements from bodies such as the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), and municipal by-laws.
• Verifying that all buildings adhere to legislation, including signage, escape routes, fire extinguishers, and hose reels as per SANS standards.
• Analysing existing fire prevention systems and implementing necessary improvements.
• Conducting regular site visits and inspections with staff.
• Delivering training on fire prevention protocols and procedures.
• Developing and maintaining a comprehensive fire prevention plan for the airport.
• Developing and implementing a stakeholder auditing system for fire safety.
• Conducting SANS audits and overseeing building evacuation drills.
• Ensuring all fire equipment is fully serviceable and in good working order.
• Producing monthly reports detailing the status of fire prevention activities.
• Building and maintaining strong, diverse internal relationships (with peers, unions, and team members) and external relationships (with service providers) to achieve organisational goals and enhance emergency preparedness.
• Maintaining appropriate interaction levels with all airport stakeholders regarding fire safety.

What the Work Involves

As a Fire Prevention Officer, you will report to the Manager Airfield Manager Services and be deeply involved in the daily safety operations of the airport. Your work will span across various areas, including airside, landside, and terminal operations, requiring a detailed understanding of each environment.

Day-to-day tasks will involve conducting thorough inspections of buildings, ensuring all fire safety equipment is functional, and leading staff in fire prevention training. You will be responsible for meticulous record-keeping and reporting on fire prevention status, alongside developing and refining safety plans and auditing systems. This role requires a hands-on approach to compliance, active engagement with airport stakeholders, and a commitment to maintaining a secure environment for everyone at the airport.
