Opportunity Overview

This opportunity at Agriculture, located in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, is for a Senior Laboratory Assistant. The role is integral to food safety and quality assurance within the directorate, offering a salary of R237,453 per annum (Level 05).

Successful candidates will play a key role in various laboratory operations, including sample preparation, analysis, equipment maintenance, and administrative support. This position is suitable for individuals with a Grade 12 certificate and relevant laboratory experience looking to contribute to agricultural standards and product quality.

Minimum Requirements

• A Grade 12 certificate.
• Three years of appropriate job-related experience.
• A Code 08 Driver's License.
• Knowledge of Public Service and Departmental prescripts/policies.
• Knowledge of the Agricultural Product Standards Act, Act 119 of 1990, and the Liquor Products Act, Act 60 of 1989.
• Knowledge and application of laboratory quality systems, techniques, and safety procedures.
• Computer skills and proficiency in relevant computer software.
• Ability to work extended hours and handle hazardous chemicals.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and administrative skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and analyse samples for the determination of chemical residues or liquor product composition components.
• Perform sample collection, labelling, weighing, drying, and cutting of sample material.
• Prepare stains, buffets, and reagents for laboratory use.
• Record analysis results and manage the storage of samples.
• Assist with the decontamination and disposal of used samples and general waste removal.
• Conduct basic maintenance, verification, and calibration of selected laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Maintain the tidiness of laboratories, and clean/sterilize glassware and laboratory equipment and facilities.
• Perform administrative functions, including inventory control of equipment and consumables.
• Manage record-keeping and update identified registers (e.g., registration book, sample referrals, results).
• Assist with the invoicing of analyses.
• Ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations.
• Mentor Laboratory Assistants.
