The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) invites applications for the senior leadership position of Director: Resource Mobilisation. This role is crucial for advancing the University's strategic goals by leading efforts to secure and diversify its funding streams.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the conceptual design, implementation, and execution of strategies focused on donor prospecting. This involves building and sustaining key relationships with a variety of partners, including individual donors, corporate entities, government bodies, and VUT alumni.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Qualifications: A relevant Master’s degree in Business Administration, Development Studies, Marketing, Economics, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 7–10 years of senior management experience in resource mobilisation, fundraising, donor relations, or business development. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in higher education, research institutions, or the non-profit sector.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of the South African higher education landscape, the funding environment, and international donor trends.
  • Track Record: Demonstrable experience in successfully raising significant funding from multiple sources.
  • Alumni Engagement: Experience in developing and/or managing an alumni programme to facilitate fundraising.
  • Competencies: Exceptional leadership, negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Strong proposal writing skills, financial management acumen, networking abilities, and donor reporting expertise. Ability to analyse trends, identify opportunities, and develop innovative strategies. A strategic thinker with entrepreneurial drive and strong local and international networks. Professional integrity, results-oriented, and capable of working effectively under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

The Director: Resource Mobilisation will be responsible for a range of critical duties, including:

  • Overseeing the Vaal University of Technology Foundation and ensuring its compliance with relevant policies, reporting requirements, and governance frameworks.
  • Conceptualising and developing a robust fundraising strategy for VUT, aligned with the VUT Strategy 2033+.
  • Prospecting, cultivating, and soliciting donations from local and international donors, corporate partners, philanthropic foundations, and government agencies.
  • Implementing donor stewardship and retention programmes to ensure improved donor support and loyalty.
  • Continuously growing and strengthening the assets of the VUT Foundation for the benefit of VUT.
  • Leading donor engagement, grant writing, contract negotiation, and partnership management activities.
  • Establishing a structured alumni engagement programme to enhance giving and long-term support for the University.
  • Building a professional Resource Mobilisation team and fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.
  • Serving as the Secretariat of the VUT Foundation (NPC) and managing it in compliance with its Memorandum of Incorporation and other prescribed requirements.
  • Managing and overseeing the performance and fundraising efforts of any contracted fundraisers engaged by VUT.
