Opportunity Overview

Transnet, through its Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) division, is seeking a dedicated Engineering Technician specialising in Telecoms (Radio) for a permanent position based in Sentrarand. This role offers an opportunity to join a vital sector responsible for maintaining critical communication infrastructure within the rail network.

The incumbent will play a key role in ensuring the continuous functionality of Transnet's radio telecommunications systems. This includes a diverse range of equipment such as microwave, trunked and open channel radio network equipment, base station peripherals, and potentially marine radio and navigational equipment, depending on the geographical area.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a T3/S4/National diploma (Electrical Light Current) 22/2/2 dated 28 December 1990.
  • Be registered as an Engineering Technician with ECSA.
  • Possess five years of experience in Telecommunication Radio.
  • Be in possession of a valid Code EB driver's licence.
  • Hold a C-Green certificate.
  • Have a First Aid (level 2) certificate.
  • Be competent in Fall protection & Fall Arrest.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of RF Radio principles and practices, Microwave principles and practices, and Electronics.
  • Be computer literate.
  • Understand Trunked & Open channel Radio networks, and Analogue and Digital Radio principles.
  • Be familiar with all Radio peripherals used on relevant networks and Train Telemeter systems in use at Transnet.
  • Knowledge of Transnet's Safety management systems applicable in the operational area is essential.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting scheduled routine preventative maintenance on Radio network and peripheral equipment, as well as on Radio transmission media.
  • Managing new installations, commissioning of new equipment, and programming.
  • Performing corrective maintenance on Radio telecommunication and associated equipment, including testing, repair, replacement of faulty items, and re-commissioning systems.
  • Providing regular feedback on fault progress/clearance to the Technical Command Centre (TCC), customers, and maintenance controllers.
  • Supervising staff and conducting progress meetings to ensure timely and effective preventative and corrective maintenance.
  • Completing various reports, including MICA (manual for infra condition assessment), maintenance, technical, vehicle, overtime, fault, and open notification reports.
  • Implementing Transnet Risk Management programs daily through level one meetings, green areas, safety talks, and written safe work procedures (WSWP) task observations.
  • Communicating regularly with the Technical Manager or TCC and customers regarding outstanding faults and installations.
  • Co-ordinating planned training for subordinates, students, and new appointees as per agreed Individual Development Plans.
  • Undergoing regular training to stay competent in new technologies and equipment deployed in the Radio Telecommunications network, and engaging in self-study where required.
  • Maintaining site files to include current records/information of equipment on each site.
