Opportunity Overview

Transnet Engineering runs an electrician apprenticeship at its Bloemfontein depot, building artisans to maintain locomotives and rolling stock for South Africa’s rail network.

This apprenticeship is based in Bloemfontein, Free State (Free State) and falls under the TETA — Transport, leading to a NQF Level 4 qualification. A monthly stipend is provided: R5 500 – R7 000 / month.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum qualification: Grade 12 / Matric
• South African citizen with a valid ID
• Aged 18–35 (youth programme)
• Currently unemployed and not on another funded programme
• Clear criminal record
• Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science
• N2 Electrical advantageous

Key Responsibilities

During this apprenticeship you will:

• Maintaining electrical systems on locomotives and wagons
• Fault-finding on traction motors and control circuits
• Reading wiring diagrams and schematics
• Applying railway safety and isolation procedures
• Completing trade theory and logbook hours toward the Trade Test

Stipend & Benefits

Successful candidates receive a monthly stipend of R5 500 – R7 000 / month for the duration of the programme, on-the-job mentorship, and a nationally recognised NQF Level 4 qualification on successful completion. On completion you will be eligible to write the relevant Trade Test to qualify as an artisan.
