Opportunity Overview
Transnet, through its Engineering Operating Division, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Database Administrator to join its ICT, Digital Enablement department in Kilner Park. This is a permanent position crucial for maintaining the performance, integrity, and security of Transnet's databases.
The role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining robust database systems, proactively resolving issues, and collaborating with development teams to align data infrastructure with key business objectives. The successful candidate will drive innovation through automation, optimize database costs, and uphold stringent data governance and compliance standards, acting as a central point of expertise for Transnet's data assets.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 3-year National Diploma in an ICT-related qualification.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an ICT environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain database schemas, tables, stored procedures, and functions in collaboration with software development teams.
- Enforce database standards, naming conventions, and best practices across the organisation.
- Manage the full database lifecycle, including provisioning, upgrades, migrations, and decommissioning.
- Plan and execute database upgrades, patches, and migrations with minimal business disruption.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using tools such as PowerShell, Python, and SQL.
- Implement and configure comprehensive database monitoring and alerting systems.
- Conduct 24/7 monitoring of performance and availability, responding promptly to alerts and incidents.
- Proactively optimize query performance, manage indexing strategies, and fine-tune configurations.
- Develop, test, and continuously improve backup and recovery strategies, leading regular disaster recovery drills.
- Implement and maintain robust database security policies, including user access control, authentication, and authorization.
- Protect sensitive data using encryption, masking, and redaction techniques.
- Conduct regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and apply relevant patches.
- Monitor database growth and performance trends to plan for future capacity needs.
- Partner with development teams for database design reviews, code deployments, and SQL query optimization.
- Collaborate with Information Security teams to align database security with enterprise frameworks.
- Build relationships with business stakeholders and vendors to promote best practices in data management.
- Create and maintain detailed documentation covering database architecture, configurations, and operational procedures.
- Continuously review and enhance existing database technologies, recommending solutions for scalability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
- Provide input into enterprise data management policies, standards, and strategies.
- Provide 24/7 operational support for critical production databases through a rotating on-call schedule, ensuring incident resolution within SLA timeframes and conducting root cause analyses.
What the Work Involves
As a Database Administrator at Transnet, you will be based in Kilner Park within the ICT, Digital Enablement department, reporting to the Manager: Digital Enablement. Your daily work will involve designing, implementing, and maintaining database schemas and functions, and ensuring these systems adhere to strict standards. You'll be actively involved in managing the database lifecycle, from provisioning new instances to planning and executing upgrades and migrations.
A significant part of the role involves technical operations such as developing automation scripts, configuring monitoring systems, and performing 24/7 surveillance of database performance and availability, which includes being on a rotating on-call schedule. You will also focus on optimizing query performance, managing backup and recovery strategies, and regularly conducting disaster recovery drills.
