Opportunity Overview

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is seeking a dedicated professional for a fixed-term contract of five years in Cape Town, Western Cape. This role focuses on the Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) project.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all biodiversity data is accurate, well-organised, standardised, easily accessible, and maintained sustainably. This position places a strong emphasis on data governance, quality control, system management, data pipelines, and the long-term security of the project's biodiversity data.

Minimum Requirements

  • A degree (NQF 7) in Biodiversity Informatics, Environmental Science, Information Science, or an equivalent qualification. A post-graduate qualification (NQF 8) in these fields is an advantage.
  • 6 years of work experience in biodiversity data management, informatics, or environmental data systems.
  • At least 3 years of the required experience must have been in a supervisory position.
  • Demonstrated experience with the ingestion, cleaning, validation, and quality control of biodiversity or spatial datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS systems (specifically ESRI tools) and spatial data workflows.
  • Proven experience coordinating data contributions from researchers, institutions, field teams, or citizen scientists, and supporting users in a data or technical environment.
  • A valid driver’s licence with at least one year of practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.
  • Experience with metadata and documentation tools is essential.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, Survey123, Field Maps, Spreadsheet tools (Excel), and scripting (Python/R) will be an advantage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the ingestion, validation, quality control, and curation of biodiversity and spatial datasets.
  • Ensure that metadata standards, such as Darwin Core and SANBI metadata standards, are correctly applied.
  • Maintain the reliability of data infrastructure, including version control, backups, and access management.
  • Provide support to data contributors, citizen scientists, and internal users, collaborating with the Biodiversity Information Management (BIM) Team on hosting, security, user access, and system stability.
  • Coordinate the entire data lifecycle management, from initial collection and processing through to publication.
