What a bursary actually is
A bursary is funding for study, not employment. It typically covers tuition and may extend to accommodation, books and a living allowance. Many bursaries carry a work-back obligation — a commitment to work for the funder for a period matching the years funded — and most require you to maintain a minimum pass rate to keep it.
What you leave with
A qualification without the debt, and in many cases a guaranteed first job through the work-back arrangement.
Where this leads next
Graduate programme or internship with the funder
Completing the qualification, where a work-back clause applies.
Entry-level professional post
The qualification itself, plus any professional registration your field requires.
A typical route, not a guarantee — progression depends on vacancies, funding and your own performance.
Watch out for this
Read the work-back and repayment terms before accepting. Failing a year or leaving early can convert a bursary into a debt, and the conditions differ sharply between funders.
