Rhodes University, located in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, is inviting suitably qualified candidates to join its School of Languages and Literatures. This opportunity is for a permanent Senior Lecturer or Lecturer position within the Afrikaans and Netherlandic Studies Section.

Minimum Requirements

For Lecturer:

• A Master’s degree in Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch (Nederlands), specialising in Literature, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language Practice, or a closely related discipline.
• Preference will be given to candidates who provide evidence of their PhD thesis being under examination.
• Some teaching and/or tutoring experience is required.
• Ability to teach Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch literature, linguistics, and/or professional communication.
• Experience in teaching or tutoring Afrikaans and/or Dutch would be advantageous.
• Research supervision experience would be an advantage.
• Some evidence and experience in conducting research.
• Evidence of accredited published outputs would be an advantage.
• Some evidence of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

For Senior Lecturer:

• A PhD in Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch (Nederlands), specialising in Literature, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language Practice, or a closely related discipline.
• Considerable teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required.
• Teaching experience in Afrikaans, or Afrikaans and Dutch literature, linguistics, and/or professional communication is required.
• Experience in teaching Afrikaans and/or Dutch would be advantageous.
• Research supervision experience, demonstrated by the completion of at least a Master's degree, is required.
• An emerging national profile in the discipline.
• A credible publication record in peer-reviewed publications.
• A track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver teaching in Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch literature, linguistics, and/or professional communication.
• Conduct academic research relevant to the discipline.
• Provide research supervision to students.
• Undertake administrative, management, and/or leadership duties within the School of Languages and Literatures.

What the Work Involves

As a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, you will primarily be involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students within the Afrikaans and Netherlandic Studies Section. This includes preparing and delivering lectures, facilitating tutorials, and assessing student work in areas such as literature, linguistics, and professional communication related to Afrikaans and Dutch.

A significant part of the role also involves conducting your own research and guiding students through their own research projects, particularly at the Master's level. You will contribute to the academic life of the School through various administrative, management, or leadership activities. The work environment is an academic setting on the Rhodes University campus in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.
