Opportunity Overview

The Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) is inviting technical experts to join its Standards Development and Review Committee (SDRC) for a national project. This initiative focuses on reviewing the current norms and standards regulations for quality and safety, which were promulgated in 2018 and are implemented across South African health establishments.

The SDRC will be a multidisciplinary committee, aiming to include at least 60 members with expertise and authority to guide the development and review of these crucial health sector regulations. It will comprise both internal OHSC stakeholders and external experts from various fields.

This call seeks specialists across a broad range of areas, including Quality and Patient Safety, various Clinical disciplines, Public Health, Infrastructure, Engineering, Infection Prevention and Control, Occupational Health and Safety, Research, and representatives from Professional bodies, Patient advocacy groups, Regulatory entities (such as SANC, HPCSA, SAPC), Civil Society Forums, and Health Systems. Representation from all nine Provincial Health Departments is also essential.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Possess an appropriate tertiary qualification.
• Have a minimum of ten years practical experience in the related field they represent.
• Exhibit expertise in one of the following areas: Quality and Patient Safety, Clinicians from various disciplines, Public Health, Infrastructure, Engineering, Infection Prevention and Control, Occupational Health and Safety, Research, Professional bodies, Patient advocacy groups, Regulatory entities (South African Nursing Council, Health Professional Council of South Africa, South African Pharmacy Council), Civil Society Forum, or Health Systems.

Key Responsibilities

Members of the Standards Development and Review Committee will be responsible for the following:

• Ensuring alignment with relevant legislation and national health priorities.
• Reviewing regulations based on evidence, research, and international best practices.
• Considering patient safety risks and quality outcomes in all recommendations.
• Ensuring that revised health regulations/standards are practical, understandable, achievable, and implementable across different categories of health establishments.
• Ensuring that the standards/regulations reflect comprehensive stakeholder input.
• Promoting continuous quality improvement through the regulations.
• Ascertaining that the regulations are applicable to local settings.
• Recommending health regulations/standards for submission, review, and consideration by the OHSC Board, National Health Committee, and the Minister of Health.
• Serving as a quality assurance body to oversee and review the work of the National Technical Working Group, which is tasked with updating the 2018 norms and standards regulations.
