Opportunity Overview

This presents an opportunity for a skilled Accountant specialising in Asset Management to join NERSA's Financial Management and Governance Department, located in Pretoria. The successful candidate will be instrumental in the management, maintenance, and safeguarding of organisational assets, providing essential support to the Head of Department.
Minimum Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree, B Tech Degree, or Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Accounting Science (BCompt), as recognised by SAQA.
- Minimum of four (4) years of relevant working experience in both Financial Accounting and Asset Management.
- Competence in National Treasury Training Requirements.
- Sound knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
- Familiarity with Generally Recognised Accounting Practice (GRAP) / International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
- Demonstrated analytical skills, project management skills, and a process-driven approach.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Service delivery skills and report writing skills.
- Presentation skills.
- Applicants with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and provide proof of such evaluation.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the full lifecycle of assets, including new acquisitions (barcoding and capturing on the Fixed Asset Register), movement, and disposal.
- Conduct physical verification of all NERSA assets and ensure inventory lists are signed off by users.
- Perform monthly reconciliation of the Fixed Asset Register to the General Ledger and calculate monthly depreciation.
- Ensure audit readiness for assets and manage internal and external asset transfers.
- Maintain the Asset Register and Inventory List, resolve all asset-related queries, and report on assets.
- Coordinate the insurance process for assets.
- Handle debtors functions, including timeous invoicing, following up on accounts, and processing interest on overdue accounts.
- Assist with payment processes, tracking and reviewing financial policies and procedures.
- Contribute to the development and review of finance procedure manuals.
- Assist in identifying key financial risks and developing internal controls to mitigate them.
- Conduct random compliance spot checks to ensure adherence to internal control systems.
- Support the coordination of both internal and external audit processes.
- Undertake any other tasks as requested by the Head of Department.
What the Work Involves
Working from the NERSA offices in Pretoria, this role involves hands-on management and oversight of the organisation's financial assets. Day-to-day activities will include meticulously updating the Fixed Asset Register, conducting physical checks of assets, and ensuring that all asset movements and disposals are accurately recorded. You will be responsible for monthly financial reconciliations and depreciation calculations, playing a direct part in NERSA's financial integrity.
Beyond asset management, the role also requires managing debtor accounts, ensuring timely invoicing and follow-ups. You will contribute to maintaining robust financial procedures, assisting with the identification of risks, and supporting both internal and external audit processes. You will report directly to the Head of Department: Financial Management and Governance, collaborating to ensure sound financial governance.
