Opportunity Overview
Mintek is seeking a Data Engineer to join their team and contribute to the development of Mintek’s data ecosystem. This permanent position offers an opportunity to work within the software team, focusing on creating new cloud services.
The role involves contributing to advanced data solutions for both internal use within Mintek and for the broader South African and global minerals and metals industry.
Minimum Requirements
- Qualification:
- At least a B.Sc Hons or 4-year B.Eng degree.
- An M.Sc or M.Eng in computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience:
- 2 years of vocational experience in Data Engineering or a related role following first graduation (BSc Hon/BEng).
- Familiarity with cloud environments, such as Microsoft Azure.
- Experience with Git.
- Proficiency in SQL and Python.
- Experience with project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project, Trello, Microsoft Planner).
- Experience with C, C#, VB.NET, or Java is considered a bonus.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain Mintek's data ecosystem.
- Develop and maintain ETL pipelines and automate data workflows.
- Maintain storage systems and data catalogs.
- Execute data operations, orchestration, and monitoring.
- Engage and collaborate with scientists, engineers, and operators to facilitate data integration across various layers.
- Ensure projects are executed on time and within budget.
- Participate in team debates and technical decisions.
- Produce professional reports and product documentation.
- Conceptualise, design, execute, analyse, and troubleshoot independently.
- Strictly adhere to SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) procedures and ensure maximum technical efficiency in project work.
- Identify opportunities for technology development and commercialisation.
- Stay updated with technology and business developments relevant to the division’s interests.
What the Work Involves
As a Data Engineer, you will be instrumental in developing and maintaining Mintek's data infrastructure. Your day-to-day tasks will involve building and sustaining the overall data ecosystem, from developing automated ETL pipelines to managing storage systems and data catalogs. You will be actively involved in data operations, ensuring smooth orchestration and monitoring of data flows.
Collaboration is key in this role, as you will engage with scientists, engineers, and operators to integrate various data layers seamlessly. You will also contribute to technical discussions, participate in project management, and produce essential documentation and reports. The work environment requires an independent approach to conceptualisation, design, analysis, and troubleshooting, all while adhering to strict safety and quality standards and staying current with industry advancements.
