This specific vacancy is for a Collections Assistant within the Collections & Digitisation Department. Four positions are available on a fixed-term contract of five months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding. This role offers hands-on experience in a dynamic museum environment.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 or a BSc degree, or an equivalent qualification.
- Proven experience working with natural history museum specimens or collections.
- Demonstrated experience using the Specify database or a similar database system.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft 365.
- A relevant 3-year degree or diploma in a related field of study is considered ideal.
- A valid driver's license is not a mandatory requirement but may be an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting with the maintenance of collection data, including the development of inventories, stocktaking, and other clerical tasks.
- Assisting with the careful packing, unpacking, and moving of collections material under the supervision of Collections Managers.
- Providing general assistance in storage areas.
- Cleaning material both in storage and on display under the supervision of the Collections Manager.
- Assisting in the preparation, accessioning, and registration of new specimens and objects as required.
What the Work Involves
As a Collections Assistant, you will primarily support the Collections & Digitisation Department in preserving and managing valuable museum items. Your daily tasks will involve maintaining accurate records of museum collections, which includes developing inventories and conducting stocktakes. You will also perform essential clerical tasks related to collection data management.
A significant part of the role involves the careful physical handling of museum materials. You will assist with the packing, unpacking, and movement of collection materials within storage areas and display spaces, always under the direct guidance of experienced Collections Managers. Additionally, you will be responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of collection items both in storage and on display.
You will also contribute to the growth of the museum's collection by assisting in the preparation, accessioning, and formal registration of new specimens and objects. This role provides hands-on experience in a museum setting, working closely with seasoned professionals to manage and celebrate South Africa's rich and diverse heritage.
