The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) is seeking a Senior Associate for Development Debt. This permanent position, based in Gauteng, is crucial for the effective implementation of approved transactions and the proactive management of Business Partners.

The role focuses on enhancing the IDC's portfolio management by providing support, adding value, fostering growth, optimising cashflow collection, and safeguarding the IDC's financial interests.

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualifications:
  • CA (SA) or BCom Accounting with a post-graduate degree (e.g., BCompt (Honours)).
  • Alternatively, BEng / BSc or a similar qualification with an Honours / post-graduate degree.
  • A post-graduate qualification such as an MBA/MBL will be an added advantage.
  • A Project Management Professional (PMP) qualification will be an added advantage.
  • Experience:
  • At least 8-10 years of relevant experience in post-investment monitoring / portfolio management.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing key aspects of Business Partner relationships, including considering risks, mitigants, and protecting financial interests.
  • Experience and knowledge in portfolio management, restructurings, Due Diligence processes, draw downs, and exit processes.
  • Accounting / relevant IFRS9, financial modelling, and analysis experience will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in assessing the economic viability of businesses and/or projects.
  • Sound experience in a financial environment is essential.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
  • Skills in the analysis and interpretation of financial statements.
  • Sound knowledge of business and the diversity of risks that may affect businesses.
  • Good understanding of different types of security.
  • Understanding of Economic trends would be an advantage.
  • Project management experience will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of Business Partner (BP) strategic diagnostics would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience on how to help Business Partners execute value levers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct post-investment and portfolio monitoring and management for an allocated portfolio of complex, technical, and/or high-value Business Partners.
  • Ensure proper handover of Business Partners from the respective Strategic Business Unit (SBU), discussing all key priority and risk areas during handover meetings.
  • Periodically conduct impairment reviews and timeously prepare Business Partner credit quality assessment reports in accordance with approved IDC guidelines and policies.
  • Conduct client visits and regular Business Partner reviews, including undertaking reviews, application of funds review (where applicable), AFS analysis, covenant reviews, and assigning risk ratings.
  • Schedule performance monitoring feedback sessions with investee companies regularly.
  • Identify Business Partners where performance is not at the required level and develop a framework for regular client visits and diagnostic analysis to pinpoint areas for improvement and specialized assistance.
  • Collaborate closely with large Business Partners to identify areas for growth and value creation, monitoring the implementation of the investee companies' value creation strategy.
  • Collate and analyse Business Partner performance data to develop high-level Value Creation Plans, assess performance relative to these plans, and identify when additional support is required.
  • Ensure that monitoring and counselling services are provided on Value Creation levers in line with Value Creation Plans, and that Business Partners meet contractual and underwriting obligations.
  • Identify strategic data to be collected from Business Partners to actively monitor and evaluate the implementation of strategic initiatives.
  • Provide continuous technical guidance to fellow team members in key areas of their responsibilities.
  • Prepare and present credit submissions (amendments, condon).

What the Work Involves

The Senior Associate will be primarily involved in the active monitoring and management of a portfolio of business partners. This includes conducting detailed financial analysis, performing impairment reviews, and assessing the credit quality and risk profiles of various businesses. A significant part of the role involves direct engagement with Business Partners through regular client visits, performance monitoring feedback sessions, and strategic reviews.

Day-to-day tasks will involve analysing financial statements, reviewing the application of funds, and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations. The role also requires identifying underperforming partners, diagnosing challenges, and collaborating with them to develop and implement value creation strategies. You will work closely with Business Partners and internal teams, providing technical guidance to colleagues as needed, and will be responsible for preparing and presenting credit submissions. The work environment combines office-based analysis with frequent travel for client interactions.
