Opportunity Overview
The Gauteng Department of Health is seeking a highly qualified medical professional for the pivotal role of Head Clinical Unit in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This leadership position is based within the West Rand District Specialists Team and holds significant responsibility within the West Rand Health District.
This opportunity involves providing specialist medical services, leading capacity-building initiatives, and contributing significantly to the advancement of women's health across the district. The successful candidate will play a critical role in strategic planning and implementation aimed at reducing maternal and perinatal mortality rates.
Minimum Requirements
- MBChB Qualification or equivalent
- Current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (for 2026/2027)
- A minimum of five (5) years of post-registration experience as a Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Valid driver's license
- Computer literate
- Sound knowledge of clinical and patient management skills within the discipline
- Ability to assess, diagnose, and manage patients, and effectively handle emergencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS provision and management relevant to the local context
- Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, communication, problem-solving, and conflict management skills
- Sound medical ethical practice skills
- Knowledge of Human Resource Management and current Health and Public Servants Legislations, regulations, and policy
- Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to prepare documents
- Capacity in human resource planning and people management
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist services in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Lead capacity building in Primary Healthcare (PHC) and District Hospitals, including the provision of outreach services with a focus on improving women's health.
- Contribute to the reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality and develop interventions for the most common causes of maternal deaths, including HIV/AIDS.
- Develop and implement Continued Professional Development (CPD) programmes across all hospitals in the district.
- Support and supervise junior staff in clinics, district hospitals, and the regional hospital complex.
- Develop and implement protocols specifically for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Support HIV/AIDS programmes within the hospital and community settings.
- Contribute to quality improvements within the hospital environment.
- Conduct research in primary healthcare and provide training to medical doctors.
