Opportunity Overview

The Gauteng Department of Health is seeking dedicated Medical Officers for its Orthopaedic Surgery directorate. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to contribute to patient care within a leading hospital environment.

These two positions are joint appointments with the University of Witwatersrand, based at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Successful candidates will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive orthopaedic services and engaging in academic programmes.

Minimum Requirements

• An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
• Current HPCSA registration for 2026/2027 as a Medical Practitioner.
• No experience is required after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
• Added advantage: Possession of The College of Medicine South Africa (CMSA) Surgical Primary exam.
• Preference will be given to South African citizens.
• Applicants with foreign qualifications must provide an evaluation certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Key Responsibilities

• Perform clinical assessments of orthopaedic patients.
• Formulate, develop, and execute evidence-based and compassionate patient care plans.
• Conduct daily ward rounds and attend Outpatient Department (OPD) sessions.
• Prepare patients for theatre and perform surgical procedures concordant with a medical officer position.
• Assess and manage medical and orthopaedic emergencies.
• Handle after-hours calls and execute urgent orthopaedic procedures.
• Provide counselling and education to patients and their families.
• Maintain proper clinical record-keeping.
• Participate in ward and departmental administrative duties.
• Work responsibly within a multi-disciplinary team.
• Participate in the orthopaedic teaching programme with the aim of passing the CMSA Orthopaedic Intermediate exam.
• Teach and supervise medical interns and medical students.

What the Work Involves

The Medical Officer will be based in the Orthopaedic Surgery directorate at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Your daily work will involve direct patient interaction, from assessing orthopaedic conditions during ward rounds and in the Outpatient Department, to preparing patients for surgical procedures, performing operations, and managing emergencies.

You will be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team, expected to manage after-hours calls for urgent orthopaedic procedures. The role also includes important administrative tasks, meticulous clinical record-keeping, and actively participating in the academic mission by teaching and supervising medical interns and students, reflecting the joint appointment with the University of Witwatersrand.
