The Gauteng Department of Health is seeking a dedicated Lecturer for the Postgraduate Diploma in Peri-Operative Nursing. This vital role involves educating and training specialist student nurses, contributing significantly to healthcare education in the province.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this lecturer position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A Grade 12 or National Senior Certificate.
  • A basic qualification accredited with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) in terms of Government Notice R.425, or an equivalent qualification allowing registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse and Midwife/Accoucheur.
  • A Diploma or Degree in Nursing Education.
  • A Post Basic Diploma in Medical and Surgical: Operating Theatre Nursing Science (R.212) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Peri-Operative Nursing (R.635) registered with SANC.
  • A Master’s degree in nursing or public health. Applicants who are in the data analysis stage of their research may be considered.
  • Proof of current registration with SANC.
  • A Certificate in Assessor and Moderator.
  • Possession of good communication, supervisory, report writing, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and under pressure.
  • Computer literacy or a certificate (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • For PND I level: A minimum of 4 years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after being registered as a Professional Nurse and Midwife/Accoucheur. A Diploma or Degree in Nursing Administration and teaching experience in Nursing will be an added advantage.
  • For PND II level: A minimum of 14 years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after being registered as a Professional Nurse and Midwife/Accoucheur, with at least 10 years of this period being appropriate experience in Nursing Education.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating the education and training of specialist student nurses in both clinical and theoretical settings.
  • Guiding and supporting student nurses effectively.
  • Exercising control over specialist student nurses.
  • Implementing assessment strategies to determine students’ competency.
  • Supporting the vision and mission of the college through participation in meetings, committees, and college activities.
  • Participating in scholarly research and community engagement activities at the college/campus.
  • Participating in curriculum implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and review.

As a Lecturer, you will play a central role in the academic and practical development of specialist student nurses. Your day-to-day work will involve delivering both classroom-based theoretical instruction and practical guidance in clinical environments. You will be responsible for creating an effective learning experience, assessing student competencies, and providing consistent support and oversight.

This role requires active participation in the broader life of the nursing college or campus, including attending meetings, joining committees, and engaging in various college activities. You will also contribute to the ongoing improvement of nursing education by participating in curriculum development and review, as well as engaging in scholarly research and community outreach initiatives. The working environment will be dynamic, combining teaching, mentorship, and administrative duties within an educational institution focused on healthcare.
