Opportunity Overview
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is inviting applications for critical roles as Examination Assistants and Quality Assurers within its Examinations Management Directorate. These positions are vital for ensuring the efficient and fair administration of examinations across the province.
The GDE is committed to fostering diversity and equity in employment. This opportunity will allow individuals to contribute directly to the crucial process of managing examination scripts and assuring quality at various offices and marking centres throughout Gauteng. There are 277 Examination Assistant positions and 1260 Quality Assurer positions available.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for these positions, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Possess an appropriate recognised Academic qualification: Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate, or National Senior Certificate Vocational (Grade 12 or equivalent).
- Be a registered student at a tertiary institution, OR an unemployed person with one or more tertiary qualifications, OR an unemployed graduate.
- Demonstrate advanced numerical skills, with Mathematics or Accounting as a compulsory subject during their studies.
- Second-year and above tertiary students will be advantaged.
- Ability to work under pressure and adhere to tight deadlines.
- Applicants should indicate any previous experience in examinations administration, whether as an Examination Assistant or in a marking centre/office-based role.
Key Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be allocated to one of two distinct roles:
For Examination Assistants (Exams District & Head Offices)
- Daily receive, check, control, scan, and pack examination scripts for marking purposes.
- Ensure the correct number of scripts and marksheets are handled per batch, subject, paper, and examination session.
- Identify and address any discrepancies regarding script and marksheet counts.
- Prepare script bags, including control lists and correct colour-coded tags, for dispatch to marking venues.
- Create and manage marking centre files for all scripts designated for dispatch.
- Assist with the dispatching of scripts to the various marking venues.
- Receive, control, and archive marked scripts at Head Office for easy retrieval as needed.
For Quality Assurers (Marking Centres)
- Receive, control, and distribute examination scripts to marking teams within marking centres.
- Ensure the correct number of scripts and marksheets per batch are maintained during the marking process.
- Assist with the overall controlling and distribution of examination materials.
What the Work Involves
As an Examination Assistant, you will be based at GDE's District or Head Offices, managing the intricate logistics of examination scripts. This involves meticulous daily tasks such as receiving, verifying, scanning, and securely packing scripts, ensuring every document is accounted for before and after marking. You will be responsible for addressing any discrepancies and preparing detailed documentation and tagging for script dispatch and archival. The work demands high precision and the ability to manage large volumes of sensitive documents under strict deadlines.
Quality Assurers, on the other hand, operate within the marking centres. Their role involves overseeing the distribution of scripts to marking teams and continuously ensuring that the correct numbers of scripts and marksheets are present throughout the marking process. This position requires a sharp eye for detail and the ability to maintain order and accuracy in a fast-paced environment. Both roles are integral to the integrity of the provincial examination system and involve working alongside GDE staff in either an office or a specific marking centre setting.

What this kind of post involves
A permanent post is ongoing employment with no end date, carrying full benefits and, in the public service, a defined salary level with annual notch progression. These are advertised competitively and the selection process is considerably more formal than for programme placements.
How the selection usually runs
- Applications are screened against the stated minimum requirements first, mechanically — not meeting one is fatal regardless of the rest of your application.
- Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a panel, and for many posts a competency assessment or practical exercise follows.
- Verification of qualifications, criminal record and references happens before an offer, and it is a common point of delay.
What you leave with
Ongoing employment with benefits, and in government a position on a salary scale with a defined progression path.
Where this leads next
Notch progression within your level
Satisfactory annual performance assessment.
The next salary level up
Competing for an advertised post at that level — levels are attached to posts, not to people.
Supervisory or management post
Experience at the level below, plus the qualification the higher post specifies.
A typical route, not a guarantee — progression depends on vacancies, funding and your own performance.
Watch out for this
The screening is mechanical and happens before anyone reads your CV: the advert’s own application instructions are applied as written, and an incomplete or unsigned form is discarded whatever the rest of the application says.
