3. Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Legal Administration Officer (MR6) focusing on Mining Appeals, your duties will include:

  • Managing the coordination and administration of appeals in terms of NEMA and other applicable legislation, with a specific focus on mining-related appeals.
  • Receiving and responding to all appeal-related queries from stakeholders, including appellants and applicants, in line with CD service standards.
  • Convening appeals committee meetings to discuss appeals, particularly those of a complex nature.
  • Attending to the filing of finalised appeals in accordance with internal filing policies and guidelines.
  • Managing the coordination and administration of waste management and enforcement appeals.
  • Overseeing the drafting of ministerial submissions and appeal decisions concerning environmental authorisations issued by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).
  • Ensuring that all grounds of appeal, responding statements, and line function comments are logically captured within appeal decisions.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to timeframes as stipulated by the 2014 National Appeal Regulations.
  • Managing the provision of general legal support within the department.
  • Ensuring the drafting of instructions to counsel when requesting legal opinions.
  • Providing support to litigation on appeals matters, including attending consultations with counsel and compiling records.
