Opportunity Overview

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is seeking a dedicated Production Engineer Grade A to join its team in Pretoria, focusing on Risk Assessment. This role is crucial for developing and implementing strategies to manage waste materials and ensure environmental protection.

As a Production Engineer, you will contribute to the department's mandate by applying your expertise in chemical, hydraulic, environmental, and geotechnical engineering. This position offers an opportunity to work on critical environmental policies, risk assessments, and waste management initiatives that impact South Africa's ecological well-being.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or a relevant qualification recognised by SAQA.
Three (3) years’ post-qualification experience in hydraulic engineering, environmental engineering, and geotechnical engineering.
Compulsory registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer.
Knowledge of beneficial use of waste and the National Waste Management Strategy.
Understanding of quantitative and qualitative risk assessment.
Knowledge of waste characterisation and risk profiling.
Understanding of the policy and legislative framework governing pollution and waste management.
Sound analytical and research skills.
Ability to manage and plan for activities, including projects and policy matters.
Knowledge and experience in contract management.
Ability to develop, interpret, and apply policies, strategies, and legislation.
Good interpersonal relations skills, stakeholder engagement, strategic capability, and leadership skills.
Knowledge of relevant engineering standards.
Ability to work independently and efficiently under pressure, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
A valid Driver’s license and willingness to travel.

Key Responsibilities

Review risk assessment reports and risk management plans in accordance with exclusion regulations.
Develop a National Threshold Inventory to inform the quality of waste to be excluded for beneficial use.
Develop methodology and procedures to determine the threshold and risk of waste material for exclusion.
Develop a database of beneficial use for different waste streams.
Process registration for National Norms and Standards for Waste.
Develop and implement quantitative and qualitative assessment tools for exclusion applications.
Provide technical and research support to the licensing Directorate on developing an inventory for products derived from waste.
Develop quality standards for safe compost and organic waste.
Conduct research on products from waste and parameters to maintain for environmental protection.
Develop housekeeping standards for the storage and handling of hazardous waste.
Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for exclusion applications.
