Opportunity Overview

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries And The Environment is seeking a qualified Production Engineer Grade A (Civil Engineer) to join their team in Pretoria. This is a significant opportunity for an experienced engineer to contribute to critical environmental management initiatives within the South African government.

This role involves specialized technical work related to waste management, water resource infrastructure, and environmental engineering. The successful candidate will play a key part in evaluating designs, managing approval processes for waste facilities, and developing technical guidelines, ensuring compliance with national environmental standards.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a relevant qualification recognised by SAQA.
• Three (3) years’ post-qualification experience in hydraulic, environmental engineering, and geotechnical engineering.
• Compulsory registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer.
• Knowledge and experience in water use, waste management, water resource infrastructure design, and mining facilities design, operation, and review procedures.
• Knowledge of Waste Classification and Management Regulations, National Norms and Standards for the Assessment of Waste for Landfill Disposal, and Norms and Standards for Disposal of Waste to Landfill.
• Understanding of the policy and legislative framework governing pollution and waste management.
• Sound analytical and research skills.
• Ability to manage and plan activities, projects, and policy matters.
• Knowledge of the National Waste Management Strategy.
• Ability to develop, interpret, and apply policies, strategies, and legislation.
• Good interpersonal relations skills, stakeholder engagement, Strategic Capability, and Leadership skills.
• Knowledge of relevant engineering standards.
• Ability to work independently and efficiently under pressure, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• A valid Driver’s license and willingness to travel.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and evaluate engineering drawings and designs submitted for new waste management license applications, variations, and Section 24G waste management applications.
• Screen, review, and approve design reports and drawings for waste license applications, variations, 24G applications, and registration in terms of National Norms and Standards.
• Manage the approval process for construction quality assurance and construction completion reports of waste facilities being licensed.
• Screen, review, and approve construction quality assurance and construction completion reports.
• Manage the approval of alternative materials to geosynthetic materials for beneficial use in terms of exclusion regulations.
• Manage and develop a case management system to support the Directorate in managing engineering drawings and designs.
• Provide technical and research support.
• Conduct research on alternative waste materials that perform equivalently to geosynthetic materials.
• Develop guidelines for engineering designs and drawings to ensure relevant engineering standards are met.
• Develop guidelines for climate change studies in relation to waste activities.
