Opportunity Overview

The FAIS Ombud invites applications for its Graduate Recruitment Programme, offering Client Care Internships for Office Administration graduates. This is a structured 12-month programme designed to develop competent entrants into the labour market. Successful candidates will be assigned to the Client Care Department and benefit from learning under a dedicated mentor, gaining exposure to various competency-based training modules.

Participants will experience working in a target-driven environment, handling complaints received from the public against financial service providers. The programme focuses on resolving these complaints in a procedurally fair, informal, economical, and expeditious manner. It offers a unique opportunity to work within an established statutory office alongside a team of experienced lawyers, financial planners, investigators, and negotiators, all supported by a comprehensive Mentorship Programme.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen with a valid South African Identity Document.
  • Hold a Diploma or Degree (NQF 6/7) in Office Administration.
  • Demonstrate a passion for public service and an interest in working within the Financial Sector.
  • Possess a strong academic background.
  • Be able to work effectively in a stressful environment and be willing to learn and work extra hours when required.
  • Be energetic, self-driven, and deadline-driven.
  • Be computer literate.
  • Demonstrate skills in people management, presentation, problem-solving, interpersonal and conflict management.
  • Show an in-depth knowledge of the Human Resource value chain.
  • Have the ability to perform consistently under pressure and be team-oriented.

Key Responsibilities

Interns will be involved in the following key tasks:

  • Registering new complaints received.
  • Assessing whether complaints fall within the jurisdiction of the FAIS Act or FSOS Act.
  • Assisting and guiding complainants regarding the jurisdiction of their complaints.
  • Extracting the essence of complaints from provided information and requesting additional details where necessary.
  • Referring complaints that do not fall under the FAIS Act and FSOS Act to other relevant entities.
  • Liaising with both complainants and financial service providers.

What the Work Involves

Working within the Client Care Department, interns will play a crucial role in the FAIS Ombud's mandate of resolving public complaints against financial service providers. Daily tasks will involve processing new complaints, determining if they fall within legal jurisdiction, and guiding individuals through the complaint process. This includes carefully reviewing information, requesting further details, and communicating with both the public and financial service providers to move complaints towards a fair and quick resolution.

The working environment is target-driven, requiring a focused approach to managing caseloads. Interns will operate within a team that includes experienced legal professionals, financial planners, investigators, and negotiators, offering a collaborative setting within a statutory office. The work demands careful attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage tasks efficiently to meet deadlines.

What an internship actually is

An internship is a fixed-term work-experience placement for someone who already holds a qualification. Unlike a learnership, it does not award a new qualification — its purpose is to convert a certificate, diploma or degree into the experience that entry-level adverts keep asking for. In the public service these run for a set term and are generally not renewable.

Watch out for this

Government internships are usually once-only: having completed one, you may be ineligible for another. Check the advert's exclusion clause before applying if you have interned before.
