Opportunity Overview

The Department of Defence is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the role of Deputy Director for Permit Processing. This senior position is based in Pretoria and falls within the Directorate Conventional Arms Control.

This role offers the opportunity to play a vital part in managing the processes for conventional arms control in South Africa. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the processing of various permits and ensuring compliance with national legislative prescripts.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:

  • A minimum of Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent.
  • A recognised Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF Level 7) in Law, Public Management, Public Administration, or a related qualification.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience as an Assistant Director within Arms Control or Administration.
  • Special Skills: Verbal and written communication, Leadership, Problem Solving, Computer Skills, Management Skills, Policy Analysis, and Programming.
  • Personal Attributes: Honesty, Integrity, Hard Working, Firm, Fair, High Ethical Standards, Personal Drive, and Good interpersonal relations.
  • Knowledge of: Government Policies, Operational Management, Public Finance Legislation, extensive knowledge of National Conventional Arms Control, and an understanding of the Defence Industry and Arms Control Practices.

Key Responsibilities

The Deputy Director will be responsible for managing the processing of permit applications for the movement of Conventional Arms, which includes the following key functions:

  • Administering the processing of various permits such as marketing, contracting, export, import, and dual use goods and services applications, in line with legislative prescripts.
  • Administering company registration processes.
  • Administering End-User Certificates on behalf of the South African Government.
  • Managing IT system functionality related to permit processing.
  • Managing the Resources sub-directorate.
