Opportunity Overview

The City of Johannesburg Metro, through its Environment & Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), is offering exciting short-term contract positions for EPWP Eco Guides. These positions are for a duration of 7 months, providing an opportunity to contribute directly to environmental efforts within Johannesburg communities.

Successful candidates will serve as community-based environmental ambassadors, playing a crucial role in empowering residents to become environmentally informed, responsible, and active citizens. This initiative aims to strengthen environmental stewardship and promote sustainable practices across the City.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Matric Certificate/Grade 12.
• Must be physically fit to perform duties such as waste clean-up or establishing food gardens.
• Possess a passion for environmental issues and for working with communities.
• Demonstrate good communication skills, both written and spoken.
• Have good public speaking ability.
• Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Previous experience or volunteering in environmental education or community engagement is an added advantage.
• Must be a South African Citizen residing within the City of Johannesburg.
• Provide proof of residence in the listed region by submitting a note from the ward councillor or an affidavit signed by an authorised body.
• Provide an affidavit confirming no criminal record.

Key Responsibilities

As an EPWP Eco Guide, your primary functions will include:

• Serving as a community-based environmental ambassador.
• Supporting the City in fostering an environmentally informed, responsible, and active citizenry.
• Contributing to strengthening environmental stewardship.
• Promoting sustainable practices within communities.
• Encouraging positive behavioural change towards the protection and sustainable use of the environment and natural resources.
• Organising and conducting broad environmental education and awareness campaigns in line with the City’s strategies.
• Leading or supporting local community awareness campaigns focused on effective waste management, clean air initiatives, water conservation, and climate resilience.
• Conducting or participating in public outreach campaigns to educate stakeholders on the City’s environmental by-laws.
• Conducting and organising school-based environmental awareness outreach and other educational activities.

What the Work Involves

Working as an EPWP Eco Guide involves being at the forefront of environmental education and awareness within Johannesburg's communities. Day-to-day, you will be actively involved in organising and leading campaigns, engaging with diverse groups including residents, stakeholders, and school children. This includes educating them on vital topics like waste management, water conservation, climate resilience, and local environmental by-laws.

The role demands a hands-on approach, including physical duties such as participating in waste clean-ups or assisting with the establishment of food gardens. While planning and coordination may occur at the Traduna House office in Braamfontein, much of your work will take place in the field, interacting directly with communities and schools across Johannesburg. You will be expected to work both independently on tasks and collaboratively as part of a team dedicated to fostering a greener city.
