Opportunity Overview

CapeNature is looking for dedicated conservationists to fill two permanent Field Ranger (Level 4) positions at the Cederberg Complex in Clanwilliam, Western Cape. This is an entry-level opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of biodiversity across the province.

The role involves managing protected areas with a strong focus on the terrestrial environment, while also supporting marine conservation efforts. Successful candidates will engage in compliance monitoring, law enforcement, eco-tourism, environmental education, and stakeholder engagement, contributing to integrated catchment management to help achieve the vision and goals of the Protected Area Complex. The position will report to the Conservation Officer on Reserve.

Minimum Requirements

• Entry-level experience in environmental services or related fields.

Key Responsibilities

• Enhance biodiversity resilience through ecosystem conservation, restoration, and effective protected area management.
• Carry out ecological projects as per the Protected Area Ecological Matrix and other biodiversity conservation tasks required for effective management.
• Implement alien invasive species management within the Protected Area.
• Perform identified functions related to historical, cultural, archaeological, and palaeontological asset management.
• Assist with protected area conservation to address biodiversity loss in key biodiversity areas.
• Take part in and contribute to planning processes for the Protected Area.
• Undertake quality control of integrated annual operations plan projects.
• Prepare and carry out reporting on activities.
• Conduct infrastructure, vehicle, vessel, and equipment maintenance functions.
• Perform functions required for collaborative activities throughout the Landscape.
• Support the implementation of biodiversity economic activities to promote job creation, work opportunities, and livelihood support.
• Manage access to the Protected Area for recreational, educational, training, research, traditional, cultural, and spiritual purposes, and manage volunteers and citizens.
• Support eco-tourism and visitor liaison activities.
• Carry out environmental awareness and capacity building.
• Execute compliance monitoring and law enforcement activities as per workplans and necessary actions for effective management.
• Participate in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) assessments and toolbox talks, and provide input for Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA).
• Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety standards and requirements.
• Carry out firefighting, disaster incident preparedness, and response (e.g., floods, oil spill, vessel grounding, disease outbreaks, marine wildlife strandings, search and rescues).
