The Banking Sector Education And Training Authority (BANKSETA) is a statutory body established under the Skills Development Act of 1998. Its core mandate is to uplift the national and global standing of the Banking and Alternative Banking industry in South Africa.

BANKSETA is an agent of transformation, actively working to promote employment equity and broad-based black economic empowerment through focused skills development initiatives. This is an opportunity for an 8-month contract position as a Specialist: Internal Audit.

The Specialist: Internal Audit reports directly to the Head: Internal Audit. This role is crucial for coordinating and executing specific processes to support the implementation of the audit plan, monitoring compliance, and preparing and presenting audit findings and recommendations to management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Internal Auditing
  • Work closely with the Head: Internal Audit to define, plan, and execute the scope and objectives of the internal audit unit.
  • Conduct internal financial, operational, systems, and ICT audits and risk assessments.
  • Document audit records for validity and accuracy, reporting any discrepancies.
  • Advise on the development of the audit scope, objectives, resource requirements, engagements, work program, and working papers.
  • Perform all phases of internal audits and assist with internal audit processes.
  • Prepare and provide first-level review of documents, system descriptions, and audit findings.
  • Coordinate audit processes to minimise delays and meet fieldwork and reporting timelines.
  • Participate in follow-up processes with management to monitor the implementation of remediation plans.
  • Provide administrative support to the Audit division and the Audit Committee.
  • Coordinate processes to support the implementation and execution of audit plans.
  • Assist with the review of audit process outcomes in terms of objectives, quality, completeness, and feedback.
  • Keep up to date with internal and ICT auditing best practices and legislation.
  • Compile internal audit reports following the Internal Audit methodology, charter, processes, and guidelines.
  • Audit Reporting
  • Communicate the progress of Internal Audit to management throughout the audit.
  • Prepare draft audit reports for submission and distribution to various stakeholders.
  • Finalise Audit Reports for quality review purposes.
  • Produce progress and information reports according to requirements and timelines.
  • Update the audit findings register.
  • Produce audit findings and recommendations reports and work with management to determine appropriate corrective plans.
  • Stakeholder Management and Relations
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders during the audit process.
  • Ensure awareness of the audit process and address areas of concern with stakeholders.
  • Assist in ensuring that audit findings are discussed with stakeholders where appropriate.
  • Update the internal audit findings register in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
  • Governance, Risk and Compliance
  • Assist Internal Audit management in developing and implementing the risk register for the Internal Audit division.
  • Analyse and evaluate internal controls to determine their effectiveness in mitigating risks.
  • Assist in the development of the risk register for the Internal Audit division.
  • Update risks register in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Determine findings that require follow-up based on the review of previous reports.

What the Work Involves

As a Specialist: Internal Audit, you will work closely with the Head of Internal Audit, engaging in the planning and execution of audit activities. Your day-to-day work will involve conducting various types of audits, including financial, operational, systems, and ICT audits, as well as conducting risk assessments.

A significant part of the role involves meticulous documentation of audit records, reporting any discrepancies, and preparing comprehensive draft and final audit reports for various stakeholders. You will be responsible for coordinating audit processes to ensure efficiency and meeting deadlines, and will also provide administrative support to the audit division. The work environment will involve constant communication with management and other stakeholders, discussing audit findings, and collaborating on corrective action plans to ensure compliance and effective risk mitigation.
