Opportunity Overview
The Armaments Corporation of South Africa (ARMSCOR) is looking for a Chief Engineer: Electronics - RF Systems to join its Institute for Maritime Technology (IMT) in Simon's Town, Western Cape. This is a full-time, on-site position.
This pivotal role involves the design and development of radio frequency, microwave, and wireless systems. The Chief Engineer will also provide expert systems and technology support to the South African Navy and other clients, alongside managing crucial IMT projects.
Minimum Requirements
- Education:
- Grade 12
- A Degree in Engineering (B.Eng. / B.Sc. Eng.) in Electrical or Electronics, or an equivalent qualification.
- An MSc (Eng.) in Electrical or Electronics with a focus on RF systems is an added advantage.
- ECSA registration is an added advantage.
- A PhD in Electrical / Electronic Engineering is an added advantage.
- Experience:
- 9-12 years of experience working with RF systems.
- Mandatory experience in the design and development of radio frequency, microwave, and wireless systems.
- Mandatory experience with RF systems development, testing, and using RF Test Equipment.
- Experience with tracking radar design, development, and testing is an advantage.
- Mandatory experience with the development or utilisation of software models to simulate, verify, or interpret raw data or trial results.
- Mandatory experience in developing software for integrating systems, capturing sensor data, and human-machine interfaces.
- Mandatory experience in the design and development of networking solutions to integrate geographically separated sensors and systems.
- Extensive and mandatory experience in Engineering and Engineering Project Management.
- Experience in a military environment is an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide systems engineering functions focused on electromagnetic systems applicable to the Maritime/Naval environment, including Radio Communications, Radar, and Electronic Warfare (EW).
- Design and develop radio frequency, microwave, and wireless systems.
- Design, enhance, and test the accuracy of tracking radar systems.
- Develop or utilise software models to simulate, verify, or interpret raw data or trial results.
- Develop software for systems integration, sensor data capturing, and human-machine interfaces.
- Design networking solutions to integrate geographically separated sensors and systems.
- Manage and execute technically complex IMT projects with multiple specialists and support personnel.
- Contribute as an expert to the development, integration, application, and analysis of naval systems within the domain-specific capability area.
- Write technical reports specifying raw data, interpreting results, and making recommendations based on system performance evaluations.
- Translate client expectations into valid technical solutions.
- Generate System Engineering documentation, including specifications, evaluation plans, and build documentation for Configuration Management.
- Execute system tests (hardware/software) and document test results.
- Interpret complex measured results and propose actions and recommendations.
- Provide expert consultancy advice and influence internal and external stakeholders on engineering/scientific activities.
